SOAR: A Lifelong Learning Group hosted by SUNY Potsdam and affiliated with the Elderhostel Institute Network
WHAT IS SOAR?
SOAR offers peer learning opportunities for area residents of retirement age. Courses are on a wide variety of topics, such as computers, contract bridge, agriculture, North Country, science, religion, and the arts. SOAR is sponsored locally by SUNY Potsdam and is part of the Elderhostel Institute Network. SOAR learning is easy-paced - there are no exams or term papers. Members learn with old friends and develop new friendships, and in learning they flex their intellectual muscle by challenging their minds and expressing their creativity. (SOAR By-laws in .pdf form)
|
WHAT IS PEER LEARNING?
Built on the idea that we are all learners and all have something to offer, SOAR gives us the challenge to teach what we know, as well as to try out new skills and to learn new things with our peers. SOAR is an organization made up wholly of volunteers. SOAR members are a remarkably energetic and creative group that enjoys intellectual stimulation, hands-on activities, going places, and good fellowship.

F.A.Q.'s about SOAR
How long does the program run?
SOAR courses usually run anywhere from a one to eight sessions in a semester. There are two ten-week semesters (Fall and Spring).
|
Where are the classes held?
Most of SOAR's classes are held on the SUNY Potsdam campus (where there is ample free parking for SOAR members), or in nearby places in the local area, with several courses held in Canton at Partridge Knoll and the Silas Wright House.
|
When are the classes held?
Usually courses meet once a week, with individual classes lasting from 1 1/2 to 2 hours. All classes are held during daytime hours.
|
What are the Membership Fees and Benefits?
Join SOAR at any time. A yearly membership of $60 (renewable in the fall) enables each student to take as many courses as they like from the SOAR curriculum. There are also opportunities to attend special classes or events, and each semester SOAR organizes at least one day trip opportunity. At the end of both the Spring and Fall semesters, SOAR also holds a luncheon on the SUNY Potsdam campus. The luncheons, day trips and other special opportunities throughout the year are at an additional cost.
