Archive Notes - December 2011
As we near the end of the semester, I write to share the most recent news with the campus.
Bicentennial Plan and Biennial Goals
The College Council has approved the Biennial Goals (2011-2013) and
the revisions to the Bicentennial Plan. These documents were developed
in collaboration with leaders of the Faculty Senate, presented to all
the standing committees of the Senate, and then posted on the web for
comments. I want to thank everyone who worked on these important
documents, which will continue to provide us with guidance as we move
forward toward the Bicentennial.
Middle States Visit
The Self Study Steering Committee for the Middle States
reaccreditation has now completed its work. Scores of faculty and staff
devoted many hours to collect and analyze all the information necessary
to demonstrate our compliance with the standards expected by the Middles
States Commission on Higher Education. The penultimate version of
these findings is available on the web at http://www.potsdam.edu/offices/ie/middlestates.cfm. When all comments on this document have been collected and reviewed, Professor Jim German will prepare the final narrative to be sent to the Visiting Team in February.
The Middle States visiting team will be on campus March 25 ? 28.
Their work on campus will occur mostly on March 26 and 27. Please mark
your calendars for these dates. Further details regarding the visit
will be forthcoming as we approach those dates.
Faculty & Staff Donor Event
On December 8, the generosity of faculty and staff was celebrated with
a reception at Thatcher. Over seventy faculty and staff donors to the
College attended the reception which honored Mike Lewis and Tina Bush as
Volunteers of the Year. During the last fiscal year (2010-2011) 326
faculty and staff members donated to the College Foundation, a
significant increase in the number of donors from the year before.
I would encourage the entire campus community to work with the Alumni
Relations Department to get involved in the annual Reunion event.
Reunion 2012 will be held July 12 ? 15, so mark your calendars! Dates
for future Reunion years have been set as well:
July 11 - 14
July 10 - 13
July 9 - 12
July 14 - 17
July 13 - 16
July 12 ? 15
Reunion is a wonderful opportunity to catch up with alumni and
renew friendships. It also is a time when alumni can recall their years
on campus and renew their ties to this very special place, and the
people in it.
In light of recent events at Penn State and Syracuse University, I have
ordered a complete analysis of our policies and procedures to protect
minors and others on our campus. Mary Dolan, Director of Human
Resources, working with other directors, has provided me with a report
with several action items, which the Presidents Council will discuss and
Much conflicting information has appeared in the press recently
regarding the shared service alliances. As usual, I have posted a
monthly update detailing everything which is going on. http://www.potsdam.edu/about/administration/president/campusalliance.cfm.
I hope that everyone has a very enjoyable, peaceful and restful
holiday. SUNY Potsdam is a remarkable institution, and I am confident
that the future will bring great things for all of us. May all the joy
of the holiday season remain with you and your family throughout the
