Computer Science majors complete a "capstone experience" as part of their degree requirements, a unique feature of the CS program at SUNY Potsdam. Capstone experiences give students the opportunity to demonstrate their ability to apply the knowledge and skills they have acquired in the classroom and lab, typically to the solution of a real-world problem. Students ordinarily complete capstone experiences through senior projects (under the direction of CS faculty) or through internships (under the direction of an external sponsor from industry).
At the conclusion of their capstone experiences, students present both oral and written reports about their projects. Their oral reports are typically delivered at the Spring meeting of the Board of Advisors.
The applied nature of capstone experiences gives CS students at SUNY Potsdam a competitive edge in seeking employment following graduation. This is especially true of students who complete their capstone experiences through internships: interns are frequently offered full-time positions at their internship companies after graduation.
