Laundry Day

“Lord have mercy on the working man”

you desolately sang

as you soulfully strummed your shimmering guitar,

aware of me only by the sound of my shoes,

but giving no notice.

Twenty-nine minutes later,

when the washing was finished,

you were there,

making that guitar pulse;

this time with different words and timbre.

An hour later, when the dryer stopped,

and you were gone,

the only thing left was a dryer sheet

where you had sat and strummed that guitar to crescendo.
