Scholarship Eligibility

You must be a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident the time of the award. Scholars are selected from the list of eligible applicants ranked by academic merit.

Beginning Study:

Beginning Studies Scholars will be freshman, beginning transfer students, or current SUNY Potsdam students who have not yet completed the gateway course in computer science or mathematics. Requirements for eligibility is broken down into those categories below.

Entering Freshmen:

At least three years of progressively more difficult high school mathematics courses sufficient to allow immediate enrollment in MATH 151 Calculus I.

SAT math score of at least 630 or ACT mathematics and science reasoning score of 27.

A combined (Math & Critical Reading) SAT of 1130 or overall ACT score of 25.

Entering Freshmen with prior college credit:

Students with less than 24 hours of college credit at the time of application will submit all of the same materials as students applying under the Entering Freshmen scholarship competition.

Additional requirements beyond those imposed on ordinary freshman applicants are:

  • An overall GPA in all prior college work of at least 2.75.
  • A major GPA in all prior college work of at least 3.50. This requirement does not apply to students with no prior college level work in the discipline.

Current SUNY Potsdam Students:

  • An overall GPA in all prior college work of at least 2.75.
  • A major GPA in all prior college work of at least 3.50. This requirement does not apply to students with no prior college level work in the discipline.

Transfer Students:

Transfer students will have completed at least 24 semester hours of college work by the time of application. Since transfer students are not expected to have completed a gateway course, they will be eligible for the beginning study scholarship by meeting the following requirements:

  • An overall GPA of at least 3.00.
  • A major GPA of at least 3.50.

Advanced Study:

Advanced Study Scholars have been at SUNY Potsdam for a least one semester and have successfully completed the gateway course in computer science (CIS 300) or mathematics (MATH 340). Students selected as Advanced Study Scholars must meet the following requirements:

  • An overall GPA of at least 3.00.
  • A major GPA of at least 3.30.
  • A grade of at least 3.30 in the gateway course for their major, CIS 300 or MATH 340.

Graduate Study:

Graduate Study Scholars have been accepted into the graduate program in mathematics at SUNY Potsdam. Students selected as Graduate Studies Scholars must meet the following requirements:

  • Sufficient undergraduate preparation to pursue graduate study.
  • A minimum GPA of 3.00 for the most recent 60 semester hours of college level work.
  • A minimum GPA of 3.50 in their undergraduate major and the field of graduate study.
  • At least a 650 in the GRE subject test in the major field.
