North Country Schools Peace Poetry Contest 2011

The Department of English and Communication and The School of Education and Professional Studies at SUNY Potsdam invite K-12 classrooms - both public and private – to create and submit original poems on the subject of peace.

Submission Deadline: February 11, 2011

E-mail all entries to peacepoetry@potsdam.edu. Only electronic submissions will be accepted.

Though this contest holds no formal position on the current state of world affairs, still we want to honor the ideal of peace. Peace is a uniquely human conception and affirms the human spirit. It is especially important to remember that peace is not merely a goal but a human right. In that spirit of reflection and affirmation, we encourage everyone to contribute a poem to this contest.

We will publish the winning poems in a calendar to be published in the late spring. Winners will also receive prizes and awards and be invited to take part in a poetry reading on the Potsdam College campus to celebrate their contributions in May 2011.

Rules

  1. Identification on individual entries: Please include student’s name, school, teacher, teacher’s email address, and grade level on poem entry.
  2. Get creative with the titles—we usually have to review hundreds of poems all named “Peace.”
  3. Illustrations are optional: Scanned black and white illustrations with artists' names clearly identified will be considered for inclusion in the calendar.
  4. Collecting prizes: At a public reading in spring, we will distribute prizes, certificates, calendars, and gifts for you and your students. If you cannot attend the reading, please give us the name of another teacher/parent who will attend and pick up these items. After the reading, please provide a large, self-addressed stamped envelope in which we will mail them to you.

Co-sponsored by the Office of the Provost, School of Arts and Sciences, and the School of Education and Professional Studies, SUNY Potsdam.
