There are four
tracks of study within the Bachelor of Music, Music Education degree
program. The courses within these
tracks prepare a student to teach in one specific area and are automatically
assigned according to the instrument/voice on which s/he are auditioning:
| Audition Area | Primary Music Education Track |
| Voice | Choral |
| Wind or Percussion Instrument | Band |
| String Instrument | Orchestra |
| Piano, Guitar, Harp | General Music |
Students who are interested in preparing to teach in a track other than the one listed above will need to complete a secondary audition in a related audition area. Accepted students should contact the Crane Office of Admissions when they begin classes to arrange for this evaluation.
Aural Evaluation
On the day of the audition, the prospective student will be asked to complete the following: a performance audition, an aural evaluation (AE Sample Treble Clef PDFAE Sample Treble Clef PDF | AE Sample Bass Clef PDF) and a supplemental information form.
Letters of Recommendation
Although Letters of Recommendation are not required for a student to be considered for admission to Crane, the Private Music Instructor Recommendation Form is particularly helpful to the faculty hearing the audition. This form and the general Music Recommendation Form should be mailed to the Office of Music Admissions, The Crane School of Music, SUNY Potsdam, Potsdam, NY 13676 prior to the audition.
Supplemental Information Form
Students will need to submit a two-page Supplemental Information Form at the audition. You are welcome to print and fill out this PDF; blank forms will also be available for you to complete when you arrive for your audition.
