Non-Matriculated Undergraduate Admissions

Non-matriculated is a non-degree seeking status at SUNY Potsdam. Categories of non-matriculated students are listed below, along with the corresponding admission requirements. All of the information must be received in the Office of Extended Education by the first day of the semester or you may be dropped from the class. Being admitted as a Non-Matriculated student does not grant you automatic admission as a Matriculated student. Contact the Admissions Office at 267-2180 on becoming a full-time student. 

All students must complete the Non-matriculated Student form either for a new or continuing student. The Office of Extended Education must receive all of the required information before class(es) begin or you may be dropped from the class(es).

  1. Current high school student:
    1. Minimum 80.0 grade point average in a Regents/college preparatory curriculum as reported on an official high school transcript
    2. A letter of recommendation from high school principal and/or guidance counselor
  2. High school graduate: a copy of high school diploma or GED certificate.
  3. College graduate: A copy of highest degree earned.
  4. Students currently or formerly enrolled at another college or university:
    1. Official transcript through last completed semester from most current institution attended.
    2. Student must have a current and overall GPA of 2.0.
    3. Employees of SUNY Potsdam, SUNY Canton, Clarkson or St. Lawrence University must complete the attached registration packet.
  5. Students previously enrolled at another college or university: Official transcript from the most recent college attended. Must have an overall GPA of 2.0.

*Note: (Items 4 and 5 above) Individuals who have been dismissed/separated from their most recent institution attended are not eligible to be admitted as a non-matriculated student. Dismissed is defined as not being eligible to enroll as a student in one's currently or most recently attended institution.

Additional Information

  1. A maximum of 30 semester hours may be taken as a non-matriculated student with no more than 15 hours per year and 8 hours per semester or two courses per semester.
  2. Only 30 semester hours taken as a non-matriculated student will apply towards a Bachelor's degree if/when a student matriculates.
  3. Non-matriculated students may register only after registration for matriculated students is completed and on a space available basis.
  4. If you enroll for 6 or more credit hours in a semester, and were born after January 1, 1957, you are required to provide proof of measles, mumps and rubella immunization. If measles, mumps and rubella immunization is not provided by the stated deadline, the student may be dismissed. Questions should be directed to Student Health Services at (315) 267-2377.
  5. Continuance as a non-matriculated student at SUNY Potsdam requires a minimum of a 2.0 cumulative grade point average from completed coursework.

Advising/Registration

Advising is available for non-matriculated students. If you would like advising assistance before determining which classes to take, please contact the Academic Advising Office, Sisson 128 (315-267-2580). If there are no available seats in your preferred class/classes, the normal add/drop process will be your method of registration. The same applies if you will be registering after the start of a semester. Add/Drop forms are available in the Extended Education Office (Raymond Hall 206). To register for classes during add/drop time period, you must obtain the instructor's signature on an add/drop form. Bring the completed form to the Extended Education Office.

Tuition and Fee Payment

Tuition and charges for non-matriculated students are assessed per semester hour for each course up to a maximum cost for a full-time, in-state student. Including tuition and fees, the cost of undergraduate in-state tuition will be $207.70 per credit hour. Methods of payment include cash, personal check, money order, VISA or MasterCard.
