Graduate Education Programs

M.S.Ed. Curriculum & Instruction 
This program is designed to meet the needs and interests of all education professionals. Those individuals who seek to obtain professional certification will find that the program not only meets the state requirements for certification, but has the flexibility to provide for individualized course planning. Individuals who wish to obtain a Masters in education, but are not seeking professional certification will find a program with the ability to be individualized to meet unique professional goals.

M.S.Ed. Literacy Educator
The Literacy Educator program addresses the interests of candidates who seek greater understanding about literacy and literacy education to apply in the general or content classroom, but do not intend to pursue careers as literacy specialists. 

M.S.Ed. Literacy Specialist
Candidates in our Literacy Specialist program can obtain initial certification in one of the following levels as well as satisfying the academic requirements for Professional certification in their Initial New York certification area:

  • MSED Literacy Specialist Early Childhood and Childhood (Birth–Grade 6)
  • MSED Literacy Specialist Middle Childhood and Adolescence (Grades 5–12)

The Literacy Specialist program is nationally recognized by the International Reading Association (IRA).

M.S.Ed. in Special Education is recognized by the Council for Exceptional Children and accredited by NCATE. They are registered with the New York State Education Department and therefore students enrolled can obtain initial certification at one of the following three levels:

  • Early Childhood Special Education (Birth-Grade 2)
  • Childhood Special Education (Grades 1-6)
  • Adolescent Special Education (Grades 7-12)

M.S.T. Adolescence Education:  English
This degree program is designed for candidates who already hold an undergraduate degree in English and who now seek Initial New York certification in English/Language Arts Education (7-12).

M.S.T. Adolescence Education: Math
This degree program is designed for candidates who already hold an undergraduate degree in mathematics and who now seek Initial New York certification in Mathematics Education (7-12 with 5-6 extension).

M.S.T. Adolescence Education: Science
This degree programs are designed for candidates who already hold an undergraduate degree in biology, chemistry, earth science, or physics and who now seek Initial New York certification in Science Education (7-12).

M.S.T. Adolescence Education:  Social Studies
This degree program is designed for candidates who already hold an undergraduate degree in anthropology, economics, geography, history, politics, or sociology and who now seek Initial New York certification in Social Studies Education (7-12 with 5-6 extension).

M.S.T Childhood Education
This program is a degree program designed for candidates who already hold an academic baccalaureate degree and who now seek Initial New York certification in Childhood Education (1-6).

Watertown Graduate Programs

SUNY Potsdam's School of Education and Professional Studies together with the Office of Extended Education are committed to making both graduate and undergraduate degree programs accessible to the residents of Jefferson and Lewis Counties. Jefferson Community College hosts the largest number of our courses on its campus, although other sites in the Watertown area including Sherman Elementary, North Elementary and Watertown High Schools are also frequently utilized.
