Tentative Program Dates

June 4 - September 13, 2014

Application Deadline: September 1, 2013

SUNY Potsdam's student teaching program in Queensland, Australia is a 13 week program consisting of the following elements:

  1. A two week summer program in which you will take a specialized course designed to introduce you to the Australian education system and prepare you for your student teaching experience.
  2. An optional two week tour of Australia's tropical east coast and outback. During this trip, you will travel by bus with the other students on the program as you are led by your Australian Program Director. You will have the chance to swim in the Great Barrier Reef, be charmed by a small town population of 45 people in the Outback as you spend the night in the town's main building which serves as the local post office/pub/hotel, as well as enjoy many beaches, animal and nature preserves, geographic wonders, and other scenic and highly authentic destinations along the way.
  3. A nine week student teaching placement. This student teaching placement meets the requirements set by the New York State Education Department as well as by the State University of New York.

Summer - Fall


Depart the United States no later than: June 9, 2013 (note: it takes two days to fly from the United States to Australia, so you must leave by June 9 to arrive by June 11, 2013).

Arrive in Brisbane, Australia no later than: June 11, 2013 and be prepared to meet the program director and group bus at 8.30 a.m. Australian time.

Orientation for Student Teaching in Australia: Tuesday, June 11 - Friday, June 21, 2013 (two weeks)

Vacation: Saturday, June 22 - Sunday, July 7, 2013 (two weeks)

Student Teaching: Monday, July 8 - Friday, September 6, 2013 (nine weeks)

Program finishes: Saturday, September 7, 2013. After the program concludes on September 7, 2013, you may fly home or you may travel around Australia for a maximum of 2 additional months; i.e. your visa will expire by early November.


SUNY Potsdam students MUST submit all of the folllowing application materials to The Center for School Partnerships and Teacher Certification (Satterlee 111) by the application deadline of November 1st. No incomplete or late applications will be accepted.

  1. All applicants must be recommended by their academic advisor and/or major department head and be eligible for student teaching.
  2. Completed SUNY Study Abroad Australia Application.
  3. Official transcript from each college/university attending/attended. Please note: a minimum of a 2.5 GPA is required, a higher GPA is recommended.
  4. Two references (one reference must be from a college professor, the second reference must be from a professor/teacher/employer who can comment on your teaching experience or ability to interact with children).
  5. Checklist for application process and acceptance rubric.
