Supervision of Teacher Candidates

The SUNY Potsdam Student Teaching Supervisor plays a key role in the development of the teacher candidate, enabling the candidate to become an effective and creative teacher.  Supervisors work closely with sponsor teachers to provide constructive feedback and guidance to the teacher candidate allowing them to grow and achieve their potential.

The Supervisor's primary function is observing and evaluating the classroom performance of the teacher candidate.  However, additional responsibilities include:

  • Provide support to teacher candidate in adjusting to the teaching role
  • Foster a positive atmosphere when providing feedback and guidance
  • Counsel teacher candidate as issues arise or when candidate is struggling in the placement
  • Always maintain open communication between the teacher candidate, sponsor teacher, and supervisor
  • Establish and further develop strong relationships with partnering schools, administrators, and sponsor teachers
