The SUNY Potsdam TOC works closely with the SUNY Potsdam School of Education and Professional Studies and its field based sites that include the Salmon River Central School and the St. Regis Mohawk School on the St. Regis Mohawk Akwesasne Reservation. TOC collaborates with the SUNY Potsdam Teacher/Leader Quality Partnership (TLQP) program to plan and share best practices in teaching seminars and professional development workshops and conferences.
The Teacher Opportunity Corps (TOC) was created in Chapter 53 of the 1987 New York State Laws. This year, the New York State Education Department Office of K-16 Initiatives and Access Programs, Teacher Recruitment and Development Unit will fund TOC projects in New York State that serve over 600 teachers and prospective teachers.
TOC students are provided enrichment activities that include:
TOC students improve their content knowledge through specially designed educational methods courses.
TOC students gain high quality field experience and use student performance standards for lesson planning at all grade levels in the Salmon River, Massena, Norwood-Norfolk, Ogdensburg, Heuvelton, Potsdam, Parishville-Hopkinton and Gouverneur School districts.
TOC students observe and then practice planned activities and teaching strategies in the classroom in order to help at-risk students achieve academically.
TOC students receive guidance and evaluation in their pre-service training from mentor teachers in the Salmon River PDS who are trained to work with at-risk students through the excellent "America's Choice" program.
TOC students incorporate Mohawk culture into the curriculum and daily lesson plans through the Mohawk Education Project.
TOC students are provided strong academic course content in their liberal arts education provided by SUNY Potsdam faculty.
TOC students meet in a student support group for the future teachers of at-risk students to share ideas.
TOC graduates are provided mentoring by master teachers during their first year of teaching.
