Enrollment Options

The pre-employment police basic training course hosted by the Law Enforcement Training Institute at SUNY Potsdam has a maximum availability of 30 students per Spring semester. There are three ways to enroll in the institute's program:

  1. SUNY Potsdam Criminal Justice Majors: Upon acceptance into the institute, you will enroll in 12 credits under advisement from the Experiential Education office and your academic adviser. These credits will be academic coursework and internship credits, supervised by a Criminal Justice faculty adviser. The academy will satisfy degree requirements as well as the requirements for police training in New York State.
  2. SUNY Potsdam students: For students who are not a Criminal Justice major, if you are selected to join the academy you will work with the Experiential Education Office and your academic adviser to determine the best academic plan for your program. This will likely include registration in internship hours, which may be usable in satisfying your degree requirements.
  3. Non-SUNY Potsdam students: While priority seating is given to SUNY Potsdam students, you may be accepted into the academy if there are seats available in any given cohort. You will still complete the same application requirements as students, but will also need to apply for transfer admission to SUNY Potsdam. Information/questions regarding this application process can be directed to Toby White at
