Writing & Speaking Intensive (WI, SI)

These advanced courses are intended to further strengthen and reinforce communication skills and abilities acquired in the Communication Experience courses taken in the first year.


Most of these courses are offered at the 300 or 400 level in the major and will be taken in your junior or senior year.

Writing Intensive Course [WI]

The focus of a WI class is on writing as an ongoing process of revision and refinement. A WI course must require a minimum of 15 pages of out-of-class writing. There will be instruction in the nature of effective and successful writing in the discipline.

Prerequisite: Freshman Writing (FW) or equivalent.

Speaking Intensive Course [SI]

Participate in a semester-long series of oral communication assignments that strengthen understanding of effective oral communication in the discipline. Assignments may take the form of group or panel discussions, debates, speeches or other oral assignments appropriate to the course and subject under study.

Prerequisite: Freshman Speaking (FS) or equivalent.
