WGS Essay Contest

Did you write an incredible essay, research paper, or seminar paper during 2010-2011 about women's and gender issues?


If so, we invite you to enter the 2011 Amelia Morey Essay Contest.

Awards will be made in each of the following categories:
1. Essays written in WMST 100 or POLS 125
2. Shorter essays by undergraduate students written in classes at 200 level or above
3. Researched essays by undergraduate students written in classes at 200 level or above
4. Essays written by graduate students in graduate seminar classes

Eligibility: All SUNY Potsdam Students. Essays written in both Women's and Gender Studies and other courses are eligible as long as they meet the above requirements. Previously submitted essays are not eligible for re-submission.

Essay Topic: Your essay may focus on any topic related to women's and gender issues and experiences, masculinities/feminism and/or feminist/gender theory. Essays must have been written for any SUNY Potsdam course taken during the following semesters: Spring 2010, Summer 2010, Fall 2010, Winterim 2011, or Spring 2011.

How do I enter my essay in the contest? Submit a clean copy of your essay-typed and carefully proofread. Complete a Contest Application and attach it to the front of your essay. Bring to Women's and Gender Studies Program, Morey Hall 103A. Because essays will be read anonymously, we ask that you put your name only on the Contest Application, not the essay itself.

Where do I get an Essay Contest Application? Application forms are available in the Women's and Gender Studies Program Office (Morey Hall 103A), and are available for download in PDF format.

When are Essays & Applications due? Wednesday, March 23, 2011

Essays will be judged by an editorial board of SUNY Potsdam faculty.
1st place winners will receive $50 and 2nd place winners will receive $25.
