Faculty Abroad

Faculty from SUNY Potsdam have a number of places to start if they want to live, work, and do research abroad.

1) Teach a short term course overseas: Develop a short course (that could take place in either the summer or winterim sessions) to teach abroad. For more information about this process, see Developing Short-term Overseas Academic Programs and get access to the various needed forms (see Right Navigation).

2) One approach is to make use of existing links with partner universities abroad. Faculty from:

  • Liverpool Hope University College in Liverpool, UK: English Department (Thomas Amorose, Anthony Tyler), Dance-Drama (Nola Rocco)
  • York St. John: the Crane School of Music (Clive Henery)
  • The Universität Potsdam exchange: English (Judith Weise), mathematics (Kazem Mahdavi, James Parks) and from music (Gary Busch).
  • This kind of exchange is most successful if faculty can trade places, teaching some of the courses normally offered and sometimes even trading houses, cars, and pets!

3) Individual initiative led to the reciprocal exchange of Judith Weise and Mark Coleman (English Department) for Jonathan Fairbanks at the American University in Bulgaria in Blagoevgrad, a university where SUNY Fredonia administers a study abroad program. Anthony Boyle enjoyed teaching in the Arab Emirates.

4) Fulbright Scholar Program. This program provides substantial funding for faculty and their dependents abroad. Some past Fulbrighters include Anthony Boyle (China, India, Italy, Syria), Richard Stephan, Richard Lunt (Tunisia). For information, check the web site: www.iie.org/cies/
