Financial Planning and Scholarships

Listed below is information regarding scholarships and grants to help fund a study abroad experience.

Make sure you plan early as deadlines may or may not coincide with study abroad application deadlines.

Databases to consider:

Study Abroad Funding through the Institute of International Education (IIE) and the database available on the Diversity Abroad website are just two of the many databases on the internet available to assist your search for scholarships and grants to help fund your study abroad experience.

SUNY Potsdam Scholarships and Grants

  • Education Majors:
    Teacher Education Study Abroad Scholarship
    The recipient must be a SUNY Potsdam Education major and first preference will be granted to an Education major who is planning to complete student teaching abroad. Second preference is given to an Education major studying abroad for at least a semester and third preference, to an Education major who is planning to study abroad for a Winterim or Summer Session. Financial need is not a requirement to receive this award but in the event applicants who carry similar GPA's, the award will be granted to the student with higher financial need. There is one $1000 award per academic year.

  • French & Spanish Majors
    The Department of Modern Languages offers scholarships for outstanding French and Spanish majors (3.5 GPA) with financial need, for a semester in France or a Spanish speaking country.  Contact the Department of Modern Languages at (315) 267-2792 for more information.
  • Music Majors:
    The Robert Washburn Fund

    The award shall be applied as support for a Crane student desiring to travel abroad for an international experience in music. The recipient will be chosen each spring, for travel the following academic year.  Contact the Crane School of Music at (315) 267-2775 for more information.
  • John F. and Anne C. Schwaller Scholarship for Study Abroad
    For SUNY Potsdam matriculated students only:  The scholarship, $1,200 per fall & spring semesters, will be awarded to a student planning to study abroad (excluding Canada).  Students must have attained sophomore or junior status at the time of the award.  The student must have a minimum earned GPA of 3.00 and demonstrated financial need as determined by the Financial Aid Office.  The scholarship may only be used within a recognized semester- or year-long academic program of study abroad or for independent research for academic credit within an academic program.

  • Judy Weise Memorial Scholarship for Study Abroad
    To be awarded to an eligible student planning to study abroad, excluding any country where the native spoken language is English (Canada - except for study in Quebec at a college or university where the primary language of instruction is French). Must be a SUNY Potsdam student, minimum GPA of 2.5 and demonstrated financial need. Scholarship must be used within a recognized academic program of study abroad or independent research for academic credit within an academic program. First preference is given to a student pursing a year-long experience, then semester-long, then short term.  There is one $1000 award per academic year.

External Scholarships and Grants

  • The National Flagship Language Program
    Funding from NSEP provides two year intensive, advanced level training in Arabic, Central Asian languages, Hindi, Korean, Mandarin, Persian and Russian.  Fellowships available to qualified applicants.

  • Critical Language Scholarships for Intensive Summer Institutes
    Scholarships for U.S. citizen undergraduate, graduate, Ph.D. students to participate in beginning, intermediate, and advanced level intensive language programs at American Overseas Research Centers.

  • Forum of Education Abroad Undergraduate Research Awards:
    This award is for anyone in any major who intends to engage in any type of “research” while studying abroad. Award amounts vary year to year.

  • Germany
    The German Academic Exchange Service, (DAAD) offers financial support for US undergraduate students for study in all fields, for 2-10 months in Germany.  These scholarships could be for a summer course at a Germany university, internship, senior thesis research or a study abroad semester/year.  This is a flexible program that can work for you within the framework of an existing exchange relationship between SUNY Potsdam and a university in Germany (Universitat Potsdam) or a study abroad program of another US university.  Or you can design your own program.

  • Lloyd Family Travel Scholarship
    The Scholarship program provides an opportunity to apply for an award of up to $1,000 to cover travel to Wales and expenses incurred in undertaking studies related to Welsh American history and culture.

  • Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Grants
    (50 per year) - Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Grants are designed to help support Phi Kappa Phi undergraduate members as they seek knowledge and experience in their academic fields by studying abroad. Fifty $1,000 grants are awarded each year.

  • Sweden
    Travel Grants for Women.  The American Women’s Club in Sweden AWC Scholarship Foundation offers travel grants for women to study in England.
