Program Type: Direct Student Exchange

Location Abroad: York, England

Program Description: SUNY Potsdam has a direct exchange agreement with the York St John University in York, England. The campus is located beside York's famed medieval wall and a few minutes away from the thirteenth Century cathedral. The YSJ Study Abroad Office provides a friendly "home base" for overseas students. It organizes orientation programs and arranges social and cultural events, including visits to sites such as Stratford-Upon-Avon, the Lake District, Bath, Hadrian's Wall and Bronte Country. York St John University in York, England is affiliated with the University of Leeds and has a combined student population on its two campuses at Ripon and York of about 2000 with a faculty of 145. York is a beautiful cathedral city of about 180,000 people. The city has interesting architecture, a rich history, and a wealth of cultural and recreational resources including many museums such as the Yorvik Viking Museum. By train, York is within two hours of London to the South and Edinburgh to the North.

Admission Criteria: Students who are juniors or seniors with a GPA of 2.75 and above may apply. The number of students accepted to the program depends on the number of York students coming to Potsdam.

Fields of Study: York St John University has programs in English and related American Studies, Business, Creative Writing, Dance, Film & Television, Fine Arts, History, Literature, Music, Philosophy, Psychology, Sport Sciences, Theatre, and Tourism. Term Dates: The program is normally for the Fall semester only: mid-September to mid-December

Housing and Meals: Students are typically housed in either The Grange or Limes Court located within walking distance of campus. Students enjoy a single room and bathrooms are shared as well as a small kitchen area. While there is no set meal plan option available to students living in The Grange or Limes Court, students are given a declining campus debit account/card that provides for approximately 12-14 meals per week and the added flexibility of eating in one of the five catering outlets available on campus.

Costs: This is a direct-exchange program in which the outgoing student pays most expenses to SUNY Potsdam, and the exchange partner covers most costs in York, England. SUNY students pay tuition and fees to their home campus; non-SUNY students pay tuition directly to SUNY Potsdam. Room and board and insurance costs are paid directly to SUNY Potsdam. Students interested in participating during a spring semester should contact International Education & Programs to determine if a spring placement can be made. 

How to Apply: Students should submit all completed SUNY OAP application forms including ALL official transcripts of colleges/universities attended to SUNY Potsdam’s International Education & Programs (IE&P) office. Once formally nominated to YSJ by SUNY Potsdam, YSJ will email directly to the nominated student the YSJ incoming exchange student application to then be completed. Do not send any application forms or other documents directly to YSJ; ALL SUNY OAP and supporting forms, official transcripts, copy of passport, etc. should be sent directly to SUNY Potsdam IE&P.
