Boren Scholarships and Fellowships

Purpose:  The David L. Boren Foundation provides resources for undergraduate and graduate study. "It is guided by a mission that seeks to lead in development of the national capacity to educate U.S. citizens, understand foreign cultures, strengthen U.S. economic competitiveness and enhance international cooperation and security."  For the Graduate Fellowship applications, applications must be submitted to the Student Fellowship Program office.  

Eligibility: A U.S. citizen and enrolled in or applying to an accredited graduate program in the U.S.

Awards areas: The maximum stipend for graduate fellowships is $30,000. Awards are provided to add an international and language component to their graduate education through specialized area study, language study or language proficiency. Boren Fellowships support study and research in areas of the world that are critical to U.S. interest, including Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin American, and the Middle East. The countries of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are excluded.

Fulbright Scholarship

Purpose:Created by the U.S. Congress in 1946, Senator William Fulbright sponsored scholarship awards to foster “leadership, learning, and empathy between cultures” as the main purpose of the international scholarship program.

Eligibility:U. S. citizens. An annual competition for awards to graduating seniors in all fields for study or research in over 140 countries. For non-U.S. citizens, awards are for study in the United States.

Award: Full support for an academic year of graduate level study, research or teaching abroad. About 1000 awards are made, and these are highly selective awards based on academic excellence and a proposed project or course of study.

Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship

Purpose: To help young people of exceptional promise to reach their full potential through graduate education.

Eligibility: College seniors or recent graduates who will be attending full-time graduate programs in the fall. Students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or better. A nomination by the college is required and students may only apply one time. Since this award is highly competitive, students must show unmet financial need.

Award areas: All academic areas. The scholarship provides funding for tuition, room and board, books and required fees for the length of the graduate degree program, up to six years. The maximum award is $50,000 per year.

Javits Fellowship

Purpose: This program provides fellowships to students of superior academic ability—selected on the basis of demonstrated achievement, financial need, and exceptional promise—to undertake study at the doctoral and Master of Fine Arts level in selected fields of arts, humanities, and social sciences.

Eligibility: Open to undergraduate students about to enter graduate school and graduates who have not yet completed their first year of graduate study and who intend to pursue a doctoral or master's degree. For U.S. citizens, nationals or permanent residents of the U.S. Students will be eligible to receive any grant, loan or work assistance pursuant to section 484 of the Higher Education Act of 1965.

Award areas: Arts, humanities and social sciences. The maximum stipend is $30,000.

Marshall Scholarship

Purpose: "Marshall Scholars strengthen the enduring relationship between the British and American peoples, their governments and their institutions. Marshall Scholars are talented, independent and wide-ranging, and their time as Scholars enhances their intellectual and personal growth. Their direct engagement with Britain through its best academic programmes contributes to their ultimate personal success. The objectives of the programme are as follows: * To enable intellectually distinguished young Americans, their country's future leaders, to study in the UK. * To help Scholars gain an understanding and appreciation of contemporary Britain. * To contribute to the advancement of knowledge in science, technology, the humanities and social sciences and the creative arts at Britain's centres of academic excellence. * To motivate Scholars to act as ambassadors from the USA to the UK and vice versa throughout their lives thus strengthening British American understanding. * To promote the personal and academic fulfilment of each Scholar."

Eligibility: Open only to United States citizens who (at the time they take up their Scholarship) hold a first degree from an accredited four-year college or university in the United States with a minimum GPA of 3.7. o qualify for awards tenable from October 2010, candidates must have graduated from their undergraduate college or university after April 2007.

Award areas: Science, technology, humanities, social sciences and the creative arts. The award covers university fees, living expenses, annual book grant, thesis grant, research and daily travel grants, fares to and from the United States and, where applicable, a contribution towards the support of a dependent spouse.

Rhodes Scholarship

Purpose: Mr. Cecil Rhodes sought to improve the world by educating scholars who would bring about international understanding and peace, motivated to change world through leadership and service in the decades ahead.

Eligibility: Candidates must demonstrate literary and scholastic achievements, energy to use one's talents to the fullest through sports, as well as truth, courage, sympathy and protection of the weak, unselfishness, and the moral character to lead. 

Award areas: All areas of academics are open, although the course of study must be offered at Oxford University.The scholarship covers all fees and travel necessary for study at Oxford.

Rotary World Peace Scholarship

Purpose: The Rotary centers for international study in peace and conflict resolution offer individuals the opportunity to pursue a two-year master's degree in international studies, peace studies and conflict resolution at one of seven Rotary Centers for International Studies located around the world.

Eligibility:  B.A. degree and three years of field-related experience; proficiency in another language than the applicant's primary language; excellent leadership skills.
