This learning community explores the cultures of the Mediterranean and North Africa through art and archaeology, and contemporary writings and films. In this crossroads of cultures, that has seen the rise and fall of great civilizations, the unquenchable human spirit that survived through power struggles and oppression still demonstrates its inspiring cultural vitality. If local conditions permit, there may be a Winterim trip to Tunisia or Morocco to study in situ the classical and Islamic art and architecture of Roman ifriqiyya.
The cluster consists of two courses:
ARTH 385 Art and Archaeology of the Classical World 3 Cr. TuTh 11-12:15 p.m. Downing, C.
Art and culture of ancient Greece and Rome as reflected in the paintings, sculpture and architecture revealed by archaeological excavations at the great sites of Troy, Knossos, Athens, Delphi, Rome and Pompeii. Prerequisite: ARTH 100, 101, or 102. Satisfies General Education SI requirement.

FREN 350 North African Literature and Culture. 3 Cr. TuTh 9:30-10:45 a.m. Lunt, L.
Students will gain understanding of the people of North Africa and the Arab world, the "south bank" of the Mediterranean, through the interconnections of film, fiction, and Facebook, and their cultural and religious heritage. Prerequisite FREN 203 and 301 or permission of the instructor. Satisfies General Education FC and XC requirements.
