Understanding and Facilitating Women’s Leadership on the SUNY Potsdam Campus and Around the World
What are some of the characteristics that current and past female leaders possess, how do individuals in our society define leadership, and how can we facilitate women’s leadership on our campus? This project will explore these questions using a three-pronged approach: 1) reading the biographies of current and past female leaders to examine what types of characteristics and experiences they possess to make them strong, positive leaders, 2) conducting a literature review of psychological and sociological research about people’s perspectives regarding the definition of female leadership and barriers to female leadership in our society, and 3) by attending workshops at the Barnard College Athena Center for Leadership Studies in New York City to explore how SUNY Potsdam can utilize the Barnard College model for leadership development in our women students. The findings from this research will help me craft and present at women’s leadership workshops for SUNY Potsdam students and possibly contribute to the development of a Women’s Leadership Center on campus.
