Reading Comprehension Instruction
After attending a Reading Comprehension Instruction workshop in the summer of 2004 through the St. Lawrence Valley Teacher's Learning Center here at SUNY Potsdam, I recognized the value of creating connections between the Teacher's Learning Center and SUNY Potsdam education majors. The material covered in the workshop supplemented and reinforced much of what I studied in the Literacy I and II courses required for my Secondary Spanish Education major.
It also gave me an opportunity to interact and learn with inservice teachers of all grade levels. In the fall of 2005 I was given the opportunity using my Presidential Scholars funding to work with the trainer of the workshop I attended, Terry Tiernan. We presented an overview of the Reading Comprehension Instruction workshop to a group of approximately 30 teachers of grades K-12 at the New York State English Counsel Annual Conference in Albany, New York.
As a final step of my project I am working to increase student awareness about the opportunities to attend professional workshops through the St. Lawrence Valley Teacher's Learning Center, especially the Reading Comprehension Instruction workshop which is applicable to teachers of all content areas and grades.
