Temperament, Harmonics, and Intonation
Literally thousands of techniques have been developed for tuning fixed-key instruments, such as the lute and piano, since Pythagoras attempted to unite the disciplines of music and mathematics. All have strived towards one common goal: sonority in music that is pleasing to the human ear. The aims of this project are to explore the various temperaments that have developed, and to determine if modern technology can allow synthesized instruments to establish their own system of intonation based on computer algorithms.
Additionally, the processing capabilities of the basic home computer have grown to a degree that allows for the complex analysis of acoustic sounds, leading me to attempt to discover physical tendencies of sound that will suggest adjustments required to create a sonorous sound in an ensemble setting.
