Language & Testing

Proficiency in English will be critical to your success as a SUNY Potsdam student. If English is not your native language, SUNY Potsdam requires you to submit results from ONE of the following English proficiency exams or request Conditional Admission:

  1. Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) - A score of 79 is required on the Internet-based exam. A score of 213 or higher is required on the computer-based exam. A score of 550 or higher is required on the paper-based exam.
  2. International English Language Testing System (IELTS) - A score of 6 or higher on the academic module, with no less than a 5.5 in any sub-section, is required
  3. iTEP (International Test of English Proficiency) - A score of 3.5-3.9 or higher is required.
  4. Duolingo - A minimum score of 47 is required

Conditional Admissions

Students who have strong academic performance in their school work but have no TOEFL or IELTS score (or a low score below our minimum) can receive a conditional admission offer and then must attend an Intensive English Language Program with one of our partners to achieve the minimal proficiency in English before starting full time studies at SUNY Potsdam.
