Language & Testing

SUNY Potsdam currently does not offer any English-as-a-Second Language (ESL) courses for non-native speakers. Therefore, international applicants must be able to speak and write fluently in English.

A proficiency in English will be critical to your success as a SUNY Potsdam student. If English is not your native language, SUNY Potsdam requires you to take one of the following English proficiency exams:

  1. International English Language Testing System(IELTS) – A score of 6 or higher on the academic module, with no less than a 5.5 in any sub-section, is required.
  2. Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) – A score of 213 or higher is required on the computer-based exam. A score of 550 or higher is required on the paper-based exam. A score of 79 is required on the Internet-based exam.
  3. EIKEN/Step Test in Practical English Proficiency (EIKEN) – A score of Grade 1 is required.
