To be considered an international transfer student, applicants must minimally have a 2.0 Grade Point Average (GPA) and 12 completed semester hours from an accredited institution.
Step 1 - Apply
Please use the on line SUNY Application.The application fee is $50.00 US Dollars.
Step 2 - Prepare Academic Records
After submitting your online application, arrange to have official transcripts from all colleges and universities previously attended forwarded directly to our Academic Transfer Services Office from the issuing institution.
Send by postal mail an official or true certified copy of your secondary school education records (transcripts, examination scores, mark sheets, etc.) in both English and the original language.
All transcripts submitted to SUNY Potsdam must be in English. Transcripts can be translated by World Education Services (WES)
Step 3 - Prepare Letter of Intent / Personal Essay
The letter or essay must express your educational goals and objectives
Step 4 - Prepare TOEFL / IELTS Score & English Proficiency Report
Only applies to students that English is not their native language.
Exam results must be sent from the testing agency for either the TOEFL or IELTS exam. We also accept proof of completion of level 112 through ELS. If you are applying for conditional admission, these scores are not required. More information on language, testing & conditional admission can be found at the Language & Testing link.
English Proficiency Report: Report must be completed by professor or instructor of English at a school, college or university or director of courses in English (or duly designated representative) of a bi-national center.
Step 5 - Provide Copy of Passport
Email or mail a color copy of the biography (picture) page of your passport. This is the page that includes complete legal name, country of citizenship and photograph.
Step 6 - Music Student Applicants Only
For admission to a music degree, students must also audition with the Crane School of Music, either in person or by video. More information on auditioning locations and dates, as well as video auditions, is available at https://www.potsdam.edu/academics/Crane/admissions. All auditioning students, regardless of how they audition, must register for an audition through the link on this web page. Questions can be sent to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Step 7 - Prepare Financial Guarantee Document
To prepare your I20 (student immigration document), the US Federal Government requires students to provide a financial guarantee document that demostrates a student can pay for one year of study at SUNY Potsdam. The document must be dated nine months or less prior to the date of the semester you are attending. Financial guarantee documents must state the student can cover the costs listed under Estimated Costs.
Please note that the ORIGINAL financial guarantee document must be sent by mail to our university. Emails, faxes and copies of will not be accepted.
Examples of a financial guarantee document:
- Official letter from a bank on bank letterhead that is signed and dated by a bank official
- Bank statement on bank letterhead that has been signed and dated by a bank official
- Certificate of deposit on bankletter head with a bank official signature and date
SAT or ACT Scores: SAT or ACT scores are preferred but not required of international transfer applicants.
