SUNY Potsdam Sports Recap ? Week of January 30, 2011

All Bears winter sports teams were in action this week continuing their push toward the postseason.

Women?s Hockey

On Tuesday, Jan. 25, at Hamilton, the Continentals scored three second-period goals to break a 1-1 tie and defeat Potsdam 4-2. Freshman forward Jenn Crawford (Burlington, Ontario/Stoney Creek Sabres) and junior forward Caitlin Manahan (St. Albans, Vt./Elmira College) each scored for the Bears. Potsdam freshman goaltender Dawna Salvarinas (Mississauga, Ontario/Brampton Thunder) made 36 saves. On Jan. 29-30, the Bears split a crucial ECAC West series with Utica College. On Saturday in Utica, the Pioneers took a 3-2 lead in a high scoring first period and held off Potsdam for a 4-2 victory. Junior defender Breanna Roy (Orleans, Ontario/Nepean Wildcats) paced the Bears with a goal and an assist. Crawford also scored for Potsdam and freshman defenseman Brittany Lucky (Kanata, Ontario/Ottawa Senators) contributed two assists. Bears sophomore goaltender Jen Conophy (Glenmont, N.Y./Albany Ice Cats) made 30 saves. On Sunday, the Bears rebounded with a 4-3 victory at Maxcy Hall. Freshman forward Jessica Silveira scored the game-winning goal and assisted on two other tallies for a three-point afternoon. Potsdam also got goals from freshman forward Emma Smetaniuk (Frankford, Ontario/Whitby Wolves), Roy and junior forward Stephanie Simons (Stratford, Ontario/Bluewater Hawks). Conophy preserved the win with 31 saves.

Women?s Basketball

The women?s basketball team fell in contests at New Paltz and Oneonta on Jan. 28-29. On Friday, the Hawks handed Potsdam a 76-58 defeat. Senior captain Aimee Kellicutt (Lisle, N.Y./Whitney Point) tied a career-high with 21 points to go along with five assists and a season-best six steals. Freshman forward Jessica Kouzan (Webster Schroeder) finished with nine points and junior forward Kaley Arsenault (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) contributed with six points and a team-high seven rebounds. Against the Red Dragons on Saturday, the Bears rallied from an early deficit, but came up on the short end of a 63-55 score. Sophomore guard Katy Briedis (Canton, N.Y./Cushing Academy) posted a team-high 16 points along with four rebounds, while senior captain Brittany Whitton (DeKalb, N.Y./Hermon-DeKalb) tallied 15 points, six rebounds and four assists. Kellicutt finished with nine points, eight rebounds and five steals.

Men?s Basketball

The men?s basketball team stayed in the playoff picture with a weekend split at New Paltz and Oneonta on Jan. 28-29. The Bears lost a heartbreaker in overtime on Friday at New Paltz by a 73-68 count. Sophomore guard Curtis Pierce (Brooklyn, N.Y./George Westinghouse Vocational) scored a game-high 25 points and grabbed 12 boards for his third double-double of the year. Senior guard Eddie Cross (Hudson, N.Y./Shaker) continued his strong play off the bench with 16 points on 4-of-4 shooting from 3-point range. Potsdam bounced back on Saturday and rallied late to hand the Red Dragons a 61-58 defeat. Freshman forward Rob Duquette (Peru, N.Y./Peru) finished with a career-high 20 points to go along with six rebounds. Pierce totaled 10 points and team-bests of eight rebounds and four steals. Cross contributed eight points and freshman forward Colin Peterson (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton) added another seven.

Men?s Hockey

It was a difficult weekend for the men?s hockey team as the Bears were swept at home by Oswego and Cortland on Jan 28-29. On Friday, the top-ranked Lakers scored four first period goals and cruised to an 8-1 victory. Potsdam freshman forward Adam Place (Toronto, Ontario/Bowmanville Eagles) scored for the Bears. Junior goaltender Trevor O?Neill (Bobcaygeon, Ontario/Stouffville Spirit) made 29 saves in the first 43:59, while fellow junior Kevin McFarland (St. Louis, Mo./Woodstock Slammers) finished with nine in the final 16:01. On Saturday, Potsdam jumped out to a 4-1 first period lead before falling 7-6 to the Red Dragons in overtime. Senior forward Fraser Smith (Fonthill, Ontario/Oakville Blades) led the Bears with a goal and two assists. Senior forward Colin MacLennan (Whitby, Ontario/Ajax Attack) scored two goals, while freshman forward Mike Arnold (Didsbury, Alberta/Kingston Voyageurs) and senior forward Kevin MacLellan (Kensington, Prince Edward Island/Summerside Capitals) each contributed a goal and an assist. Between the pipes O?Neill stopped 12 shots in 28:37 and McFarland made 19 stops in the final 32:32 to close out the contest.

Swimming & Diving

The swimming & diving teams closed their regular season schedule by defeating St. Michael?s in a dual meet Saturday, Jan. 29, at Colchester, Vt. The men?s team won by a 155-133 count, while the women narrowly beat the Purple Knights 148-138. On the men?s side, sophomore Alexander Taylor (Port Ewen, N.Y./Kingston) and freshman Dylan Woythal (Duanesburg, N.Y./Schalmont) won three events apiece to lead Potsdam. Taylor won the 100 breaststroke (1:01.82) and the 200 breaststroke (2:18.82), while Woythal captured the 200 butterfly (2:10.36) and 100 butterfly (57.87). Both were victorious as members of the 200 medley relay team (1:44.71). Sophomore Liz Ringer (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) and freshman Laurissa Coombs (Port Jefferson, N.Y./Ward Melville) paced the women?s squad with two individual triumphs each. Ringer won the 200 butterfly (2:33.17) and 100 butterfly (1:04.12), and Coombs took home the 500 freestyle (5:40.41) and 400 individual medley (5:03.99). The men finished the regular season with a 7-1 record in dual meets, while the women posted a 6-2 mark.

Male and Female Performers of the Week

Freshman basketball player Rob Duquette is this week?s Bears Male Performer of the Week. Duquette?s career-best 20 points helped Potsdam earn a pivotal SUNYAC road victory over Oneonta on Saturday. The forward is currently the Bears? third-leading scorer with 9.7 points per game.

Freshman swimmer Laurissa Coombs is this week?s Bears Female Performer of the Week. Coombs? two victories in individual events helped Potsdam edge the Purple Knights 148-138 on Saturday.

Weekly Preview

The women?s basketball team (2-15, 1-9 SUNYAC) travels to Plattsburgh on Tuesday, Feb. 1, for a 6 p.m. tip-off. On Feb. 4-5, the Bears head to Geneseo and Brockport for 6 p.m. and 2 p.m. contests, respectively.

The men?s basketball team (6-11, 5-5 SUNYAC) faces Plattsburgh in an 8 p.m. road match up on Tuesday, Feb. 1. The Bears then trek to Geneseo and Brockport on Feb. 4-5. Potsdam faces the Blue Knights at 8 p.m. on Friday and the Golden Eagles at 4 p.m. on Saturday.

The women?s hockey team (8-11-1, 4-9 ECAC West) travels to Plattsburgh on Wednesday, Feb. 2. The Bears take on the Cardinals at 7 p.m. in their lone game of the week.

The men?s hockey team (5-14-1, 3-9) travels to Morrisville for its only game of the week on Friday, Feb. 4, at 7 p.m.
