SUNY Potsdam Sports Recap ? Week of November 14, 2010
The men?s basketball team, men?s and women?s ice hockey teams, the cross country team and swimming and diving teams were in action last week.
In a home exhibition matchup against Algonquin on Nov. 8, the Bears went on a 14-3 run at the end of the first half to close a 14-point deficit to just 33-30 at half time. Potsdam took its first lead, 36-35, with 17:11 remaining and the two teams traded baskets for the rest of the contest. Algonquin hit two free throws with seven seconds left to take a 67-65 lead and the Bears missed a three at the buzzer to fall by the same score. Sophomore forward Curtis Pierce (Brooklyn, N.Y./George Westinghouse Vocational) led Potsdam with 16 points. Senior guard Eddie Cross (Hudson, N.Y./ Shaker) contributed 14 points and sophomore guard Jordan McCallister (Cornwall, Ontario/ St. Joseph's Catholic) also hit double digits with 10 points.
The men?s hockey team defeated Morrisville 4-2 in its home opener on Nov. 12. After trailing 1-0 early in the first period, the Bears got three unanswered goals by junior forward Todd Hosmer (Scarbrough, Ontario/Newmarket Hurricanes), freshman forward Mike Arnold (Didsbury, Alberta/Kingston Voyageurs) and senior forward Fraser Smith (Fonthill, Ontario/Oakville Blades). The Mustangs closed the gap to 3-2 with under three minutes to play in the third period, but junior forward Sy Nutkevitch (Montreal, Quebec/Cornwall Colts) iced the victory with an empty-netter with 17 seconds left. Junior goaltender Trevor O?Neill ((Bobcaygeon, Ontario/Stouffville Spirit) made 30 saves for the win.
The cross country team was at Oneonta for the NCAA Division III Atlantic Regional Cross Country Championships. Sophomores Ben Strickland (Geneseo, N.Y./Geneseo) and Alexander Getty (Old Forge, N.Y./Town of Webb UFSD) led the men with 8k times of 29:36.6 and 30:43.4, respectively. Junior Holly Heimer (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) paced the women with a 5k time of 26:41.3 and senior Molly Rynders (Williamson, N.Y./Williamson) ran a 5k time of 30:04.
Swimming and Diving
The swimming and diving team remained undefeated with a road victory at Brockport on Nov. 13. The men defeated the Golden Eagles 156.5-136.5, while the women won by a 150-147 score. Junior Ryan Wentz (Pendleton, N.Y./Starpoint) won the 1,000 freestyle (10:26.49), the 200 butterfly (1:58.93), and the 100 butterfly (53.34) to lead the men. Freshmen Laurissa Coombs (Port Jefferson, N.Y./Ward Melville) and Ghena Binzer (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Baker), as well as junior Brittany Berrus (Lowville, N.Y./Lowville), each won two solo events and were teammates on the winning 400 medley relay team to pace the women.
The women?s hockey team opened its season with a split against Buffalo State on Nov. 13-14. Potsdam got off to a strong start with a 3-2 victory over Buffalo State at home on Nov. 13. Junior forward Annmarie Lewis (Newmarket, Ontario/Aurora Panthers) scored two goals. Junior forward Caitlin Manahan (St. Albans, Vt./Elmira College) assisted on both of Lewis? goals and scored the game-winner on a power play in the third period. Jen Conophy made 30 saves to preserve the win. On Nov. 14, the Bears rallied from a 1-0 deficit on goals from junior forward Stephanie Simons (Stratford, Ontario/Bluewater Hawks) and junior defenseman Breanna Roy (Orleans, Ontario/Nepean Wildcats) for a brief 2-1 lead. The Bengals responded with four unanswered goals to grab a 5-2 lead. The Bears? freshman forward Jessica Silveira (Brampton, Ontario/Brampton Thunder) scored the her first collegiate goal in the third period, but Potsdam fell 5-3.
Male and Female Performers of the Week
Sophomore basketball player Curtis Pierce is the Bears? Male performer of the Week. Pierce led the Potsdam with 16 points in their exhibition with Algonquin.
Junior hockey player Caitlin Manahan is the Bears? Female Performer of the Week. Manahan the scored the game-winning goal and recorded two assists in Potsdam?s 3-2 win over Buffalo State on Friday. She also tallied an assist on Sunday for a four-point weekend.
The women?s basketball team opens its season on Monday, Nov. 15, with a 6 p.m. tip-off against Utica. The Bears then host St. Lawrence at 7 p.m. on Nov. 17, and Canton at 6 p.m. on Nov. 19.
The men?s basketball team also opens against Utica on Monday, Nov. 15, at 8 p.m. The Bears will then participate in the Casella North Country Tournament at Clarkson on Nov. 19-20. Potsdam will face St. Joseph?s (Vt.) at 8 p.m. on Friday. On Saturday, the Bears will face either Canton or the host Golden Knights in the 1 p.m. consolation game or 3 p.m. championship.
The men?s hockey team (2-3, 2-3 SUNYAC) hosts western N.Y. foes Fredonia and Buffalo State on Nov. 19-20, respectively. Both games are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
The women?s hockey team (1-1, 1-1 ECAC West) travels to RIT for games on Nov. 19-20. The Bears take on the Tigers at 7 p.m. on Friday and 3 p.m. on Saturday.
The swimming and diving team hosts the North Country Invitational on Nov. 19-20. The action starts at 4 p.m. on Friday and 9 a.m. on Saturday.
