SUNY Potsdam Sports Recap ? Week of November 28, 2010
It was a light holiday week for the Bears as there were only three contests. The women?s hockey and basketball teams were on the road, while the men?s hockey team was at home.
On Nov. 23, Potsdam dropped a 3-1 road decision to seventh-ranked Middlebury. The Bears fell behind 3-0 before junior Katie Komsa (Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario/Sault Ste. Marie AA Midget) broke up the shutout with her first goal of the season in the third period. Junior goaltender Jen Conophy (Glenmont, N.Y./Albany Ice Cats) was strong again, making 36 saves for Potsdam.
The Bears men?s hockey team hosted ECAC East foe Skidmore on Nov. 23. Potsdam held leads of 1-0, 4-1, and 5-3, but the Thoroughbreds battle back to tie the game at five in the third period. At the 13:13 mark of the final 20 minutes, junior defenseman Matt Rhymer (Kingston, Ontario/Yarmouth Mariners) gave the Bears the lead for good. Potsdam?s 6-5 win snapped a two-game skid. Junior defenseman Hunter Syrydiuk (Toronto, Ontario/Bowmanville Eagles), senior forward Fraser Smith (Fonthill, Ontario/Oakville Blades), junior forward Sy Nutkevitch (Montreal, Quebec/Cornwall Colts), and junior forward Todd Hosmer (Toronto, Ontario/Newmarket Hurricanes) each had two-point games. Junior goaltender Trevor O?Neill (Bobcaygeon, Ontario/Stouffville Spirit) made 36 saves to preserve the win.
The women?s basketball game traveled to Ithaca on Nov. 28 to take on the Bombers. The Bears led for most of the first half, but a Bomber second half surge carried Ithaca to a 65-41 victory. Sophomore guard Katy Briedis (Canton, N.Y./Cushing Academy) scored a team-high 10 points for Potsdam. Senior guard Aimee Kellicutt (Lisle, N.Y./Whitney Point) contributed nine points and four rebounds, while junior forward Kaley Arsenault (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) added seven points and a team-high six boards.
