(POTSDAM, NY) SUNY Potsdam athletes Maureen Curley and Alvin Dike were recently named the Maxcy-Molnar Award winners for the 2008-09 school year as Bears conducted their annual Athletic Banquet. The Maxcy-Molnar Award is presented annually to Potsdam’s outstanding senior male and female athlete. Curley (Madrid/Madrid-Waddington) is a member of the women's soccer and basketball teams while Dike (Bronx/Msgr. Scanlan) is on the men's basketball team. Tara Ruckh was named the 2009 Coach of the Year by the Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC). Ruckh’s women’s basketball team finished the past season with a 17-12 overall record and advanced to the Championship game of the SUNYAC Tournament for the first time in school history. Sophomore Kelsey Butz (Schenectady/Schenectady) was named the women’s soccer MVP while freshman Dedra Palmer (Whitesboro/Whitesboro) was the recipient of the Coaches Award. Senior John McCloskey (Tully/Tully) was chosen as the men’s soccer MVP as sophomore Jon Reeves (Macedon/Pal-Mac) received that team’s Coaches Award. The women’s volleyball MVP Award went to senior Sammie Pickering (Tupper Lake/ Tupper Lake). Pickering was previously named to the 2008 All-SUNYAC Volleyball Team. Sophomore Diana Murphy (Warwick/Warwick) was chosen for Potsdam’s Coaches Award. Sarah Rasco (Cadyville/ Saranac Central) was the women’s cross-country MVP while fellow freshman Nadine Longmore (Lorraine/South Jefferson) was selected for the Coaches Award. Freshman Stephen Trefethen (Potsdam/Potsdam) received the men’s cross-country MVP Award while junior Jared Longmore (Lorraine/South Jefferson) was chosen for the Coaches Award. The men’s golf MVP Award was presented to sophomore Shane Laurie (Canton/Canton) while freshman Benton Sullivan (Massena/Massena) received the Coaches Award. Freshman Kate Matthews (Malone/Franklin Academy) was named the women’s swimming & diving Team MVP while sophomore Rosie Shrout (Irondequoit/Eastridge) was presented with the Coaches Award. All-American diver Nathan LaRowe (Latham/Shaker) received the men’s swimming & diving MVP Award. Junior Jordan Goff (Lockport/Lockport) was chosen for the team’s Coaches Award. Brendan Graney (Ticonderoga/Ticonderoga) was chosen for the men’s basketball MVP Award while fellow senior Brandon Siskavich (Peru/Peru) received the Coaches Award. 2009 All-SUNYAC Team member Connor Treacy (Markham, ONT/Markham Waxers) was the men’s hockey MVP while fellow junior Luke Beck (Charlottetown, PEI/Charlottetown Abbies) was selected for the Coaches Award. Junior Hilary Hitchman (Potsdam/Oswego State) was named women’s hockey MVP while sophomore Kristine Faffley (Westmoreland/U-Mass Boston) received the Coaches Award. Senior Kelsey Shoen (Waddington/Madrid-Waddington), a member of the 2009 SUNYAC All-Tournament Women’s Basketball Team, received the Bears Award which was the only award given by Potsdam’s women’s basketball team. Shoen was also the recipient of the women’s lacrosse Coaches Award. Junior Molly Lehman-Lewis (Canandaigua/Canandaigua Academy) was named the women’s lax MVP. Ryan McHugh (Lake Clear/Lake Clear) was the men’s Lacrosse MVP while fellow senior AJ Lalonde (Rochester/Rush Henrietta) was the Coaches Award recipient. Dana Vollmuth (Great River/East Islip) a sophomore and a 2009 All-SUNYAC Team member was chosen as the women’s softball MVP. Freshman Danielle Tierney (Champlain/Northeastern Clinton) was selected for the Coaches Award. Sophomore Janet Peachey (Rochester) was chosen as the equestrian team’s MVP while junior Alyssa Franier (Pittsford) received the Coaches Award.
