SUNY Potsdam men's basketball team names new captains
SUNY Potsdam men's head basketball coach Sherry Dobbs has named his three captains for the upcoming 2013-14 season.
Voting took place amongst the coaching staff and the players.
Senior Rob Duquette (Peru, N.Y. / Peru), junior Zac Adams (Potsdam, N.Y. /Potsdam) and junior Greg Torchon (Spring Valley, N.Y. /St. Joe's ) were bestowed with the honors.
Duquette, a tri-captain for the third time, started in 17 games and averaged 25 minutes per game. The 6-foot-6 forward shot 65 for 131 from the field (49.6%) while averaging 9.8 points and 5.6 rebounds per game.
"He's one of the hardest working kids around," Dobbs said. "He's a great leader and a really hard worker. He's very passionate about basketball who leads by example. He's also become more willing to be vocal with the team. He's somebody who is going to be a go-to-guy for us throughout the season."
Adams, 6-foot-5 swingman, played in 25 games and started in 16 games. He averaged 6.2 points and 3.8 rebounds per game.
"He's one of those players who has really high character," Dobbs said." It was easy to name him a captain because he's somebody who does the right thing. He's only going to grow into a leader more as he becomes more competent."
Torchon, who missed all of last season with a broken hand, played two seasons prior to that and is praised for his hard-working nature and super defense.
"He sets a great example for the commitment you need to make in order to be a great player," Dobbs added. "He's a great organizer. He makes others aware of where they need to be. He's worked really hard and he'll be an impact player for us."
Potsdam will open the 2013-14 season by hosting the North Country Invitational Nov. 15-16 at Jerry Welsh Gymnasium.
