Bears fall to Scarlet Raiders in OT; Plattsburgh routs Lyndon for Collegiate Cup Title

POTSDAM, N.Y.?The SUNY Potsdam men's soccer team (1-1) allowed a goal just 1:20 into overtime, falling 2-1 to Rutgers-Newark (1-1) in the second round of the Collegiate Village Cup this afternoon. The Scarlet Knights claimed runner-up status. In the final game of the men's tournament, Plattsburgh State (2-0) downed Lyndon State (0-2) 6-0 to capture the tournament championship.

Excellent ball control and defense were the stories of the first half as scoring opportunities were scarce. The teams combined for just 12 shots in the first half and several came in the last few minutes. The Bears got on the board first in as junior forward Eduardo Figueroa tapped home a quick pass from junior forward Alex Minsker in the 30th minute. The tight play continued until the final 10 minutes and the Scarlet Raiders drew even at 41:26. On a similar play to the Bears goal, Rutgers-Newark junior forward Raphael Araujo buried a quick pass from freshman midfielder Paulino Marques. The score remained knotted at one all at the half.

The play was more physical early in the second half resulting in a red card for the Scarlet Raiders. After the pace of the play picked up, the Bears had some opportunities, but couldn't regain the lead. With just over 14 minutes remaining in the second half, Araujo broke free with a long pass down the right side, but Potsdam freshman goalkeeper Nick Davies made a diving stop to keep the game tied. Six minutes later, Araujo was at it again in front of the net firing a loose ball toward the net. Davies came up with another big save as the clock continued to wind down. Freshman forward Dylan Elias nearly struck with 1:30 to go but fired the ball wide of a mostly empty net.

Rutgers-Newark wasted no time in the extra session. Paulino slipped through the defense and fired a shot into Davies at close range. He then dumped the rebound into the back of the net for the victory.

Potsdam edged the Scarlet Raiders 16-14 in shots and finished with an 8-0 advantage in corner kicks. Davies and Rutgers-Newark sophomore goalkeeper Matt Broomall each stopped six shots.

In the finale, the Cardinals put the game away early. Freshman forward Alexis Archilla notched an unassisted tally just 3:55 minutes into the contest. Less than three minutes later sophomore midfielder Ethan Votraw finished a pass from senior forward Joe Aratari to double the lead. At the 11:28 mark, Archilla buried his second of the day on a helper from senior midfielder Matt Hamilton for a 3-0 advantage.

In the second half, Plattsburgh continued to dominate and doubled its score. Freshman forward Chris Bowden scored at 54:49 on a cross from senior forward Tom Greene. Two minutes later Greene set up senior forward Steve Zacharczyk. In the 74th minute, Freshman forward Luke VanDixhorn closed the scoring at 6-0, burying his own rebound.

The Cardinals outshot the Hornets 36-2. Plattsburgh sophomore goalkeeper Mitchell Jordon earned the win without a save in the first 59:05. He was relieved by junior goalie Matt Bonomini who met the same resistance in the final 30:55. Lyndon State Junior goalie Jason Marks allowed five goals and made nine saves in the first 58:38. Junior Jason Pelkey closed out the game, making one save and allowing two goals in the final 31:22.

The Bears are back in action on Wednesday, September 4, when they travel to Johnson State for a 4 p.m. contest.
