No. 10 Roadrunners surge past Bears
MAHWAH, N.J. – The SUNY Potsdam men's basketball team (4-6) dropped a hard fought game to No. 10 ranked Ramapo College (12-1) late Sunday afternoon. Senior guard Curtis Pierce led the Bears with 23 points and seven rebounds.
Potsdam continued its momentum from yesterday's win into the first half of today's contest. Senior guard Mark Lake, Jr. put the Bears on the board first with a three pointer at the 18:17 mark. However, Ramapo senior guard Anthony LoRusso hit a pair of free throws to regain the lead with 17:35 remaining. The Roadrunners maintained a slight lead over the Bears for 11 minutes until Lake drilled a jumper to claim the 25-24 advantage. Shortly after, Pierce tipped in a missed shot to continue the 6-0 Potsdam run. Sophomore guard Keith Benthall stopped the Bears momentum with a three at the 3:34 mark to tie the game at 34 all. The Roadrunners began to build a small lead late in the first half but junior forward Colin Peterson would answer. The Hilton, N.Y. native buried his first basket of the game from the corner to bring the Bears within two points of the Roadrunners going into halftime.
Ramapo came out of the gate in the second half on fire. A jumper by Garrett Thiel sparked a 10-0 run for the Roadrunners at the 19:29 mark. Lake ended the Potsdam drought with a mid range jump shot two minutes later. The Bears clawed their way back into the game as Peterson connected on back-to-back three pointers to cut the deficit to one with 14:53 left in the game. Ramapo continued to hold a slight advantage until sophomore forward John Martens initiated a 10-2 run. Potsdam was unable to recover from the late surge and fell 94-80 to the 10th ranked Roadrunners.
Ramapo shot 58% from the floor and from beyond the arc. Potsdam shot just 43% for the game and 28% from the three-point line. The Roadrunners held the advantage at the free throw line, converting on 29 of 38 attempts. Lake totaled 16 points and three assists. Junior forward Rob Duquette and Peterson each notched 12 points.
Senior guard Will Sanborn led the Roadrunners with 27 points. LoRusso added 20 points and 6 assists. Senior forward Stephon Treadwell tallied 13 points and eight rebounds. Thiel and Benthall each contributed 11 points, respectively.
The Bears return to action on Jan. 11-12 when they travel to Brockport and SUNY Geneseo.
