Late Blue Devil surge tops Bears

FREDONIA, N.Y.—Fredonia State (9-7, 4-6 SUNYAC) used a late burst to pull away from the SUNY Potsdam women's basketball team (1-16, 0-10) for a 75-57 victory on Friday night. Jaime Warren scored a game-high 27 points to lead the Blue Devils, while teammate Becky Hebert added 18 more. Senior guard Katy Briedis led the Bears with 16 points and junior forward Jessica Kouzan finished with 10 points and 10 boards for a double-double.

A free throw from Grace Moore gave Fredonia a seven-point, 17-10 advantage with 12:35 left in the first half. Potsdam answered with a 14-3 run over the next seven minutes to grab a 24-20 lead. Briedis capped the comeback with a three-pointer at the 5:37 mark. The momentum swung back in the opposite direction as the Blue Devils finished the period on a 12-2 run. Two free throws from Warren gave Fredonia a 32-36 advantage at the break.

The second half looked much like the first early on. A Nikole Lindquist layup just over three minutes into the period gave Fredonia a 38-30 lead, but again the Bears rallied. An 8-2 run got Potsdam to within 40-38 with 14:11 remaining. Potsdam hung tough over the next seven minutes. A Briedis jumper with over seven minutes left closed the gap to 53-49. Fredonia seized control of the contest after the basket and closed the game on a 22-8 steak for the 75-57 victory.

The Blue Devils shot 50 percent from the floor, while the Bears finished at 38.9. Fredonia closed the game with a 37-30 advantage on the boards. Fredonia's Lindquist posted a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds and Moore contributed 10 points. Bears sophomore forward Margaret Wall scored eight points on the night.

Potsdam is back in action tomorrow afternoon as the Bears battle Buffalo State at 2 p.m.
