Continentals double up Bears, 4-2
POTSDAM, N.Y.—Hamilton College (10-6-1) got a goal and an assist each from junior forward Nikki Haskins and senior forward Katie Zimmerman in a 4-2 victory over the SUNY Potsdam women's hockey team (7-11-2) at Cheel Arena on Tuesday night. Junior forward Amanda Lucky and sophomore forward Izzy Fayerman each had a goal and an assist for the Bears.
The Continentals scored on their second shot of the game. Zimmerman fired a shot on goal and Haskins scored on the rebound 36 seconds into the contest. Potsdam senior goalie Jen Conophy was solid for the rest of the period. After withstanding another offensive burst over the next few minutes, the Bears' offense picked up its energy. At the 11:27 mark, Amanda Lucky tied the game on a wraparound from the right side of the net. Fayerman assisted on the goal. Just 49 seconds later, freshman forward Megan Fitzgerald put Hamilton back in front. Conophy got a piece of the puck, but it slid past her. Junior defenseman Jill Tokarczyk and Haskins recorded the assists. The Continentals outshot Potsdam 14-7 in the first 20 minutes and led 2-1 at the break.
The teams traded chances in an even second period. Hamilton held a 13-10 shot advantage. At 10:38, freshman forward Hannah Bartlett jammed the puck between the left post and Conophy's right skate for a 3-1 Continental lead. Freshman forward Grace Murphy notched the assist on the goal. Conophy and Hamilton junior goalie Tori Bogen shut down the offenses the rest of the period.
Just 3:26 into the 3rd period, Zimmerman buried her own rebound on the power play to give the Continentals a 4-1 lead. Bartlett assisted on the play. Eight minutes later, the Bears got back to within 4-2 on an even strength tally from Fayerman. Freshman defenseman Katie Marsman and Amanda Lucky assisted on the goal. Hamilton's defense clamped down after the marker to seal the win.
Conophy finished with 36 saves, while Bogen stopped 20 shots for her first win of the season. The Continentals outshot the Bears 40-22 on the night. Hamilton was 1-2 on the man advantage and Potsdam was 0-1.
Next, the Bears head for Pittsburgh for two important conference games at Chatham over the weekend. Potsdam battles the Cougars at 3 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday.
