POTSDAM, N.Y.—SUNY Potsdam women's hockey players Jen Conophy and Sarah Nelson have been recognized for their play during the week ending Feb. 17, by the Eastern College Athletic Conference West. Conophy is the conference's Goalie of the Week and Nelson is the Rookie of the Week.
With the Bears needing two victories to reach the ECAC West Playoffs for the second year in a row, Conophy gave Potsdam 80 shutout minutes this weekend. On Saturday against Buffalo State, the senior came off the bench in the third period to slam the door on the Bengals with seven saves in a 4-3 victory. On Sunday, Conophy got the start and stopped all 22 shots she faced in the postseason-clinching 1-0 shutout of Buffalo State. The shutout was the second of the goaltender's career.
This season, Conophy is 3-8-2 with a .891 save percentage and a 3.55 goals-against-average. She is Potsdam's all-time wins leader with 20 victories.
Nelson notched two critical points in Potsdam's sweep of Buffalo State last weekend. In Saturday's contest, the forward assisted on the Bears' game-winning goal. On Sunday, the freshman scored the game's lone goal to put Potsdam back in the postseason for the second year in a row.
During her rookie campaign, Nelson has three goals and four assists for seven points, while playing in 24 of the Bears 25 contests.
Next, fifth-seeded Potsdam will travel to fourth-seeded Utica College on Friday, Feb. 22, for the first round of the ECAC West Playoffs. Faceoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. Potsdam tied Utica 1-1 on the road on Jan. 12, before falling 2-0 at Cheel Arena on Jan. 13. The Bears have now reached the playoffs in three of their first five varsity seasons.
