Update: More records fall during evening session of SUNYAC Swim Championships
During Friday's evening session, the SUNY Potsdam foursome of Dan Costa (Spencerport, N.Y./ Spencerport),
Richie Zimmerman (Victor, N.Y. / Victor),Tyler Zapisek (Syracuse, N.Y. / West Genesee) and Ricky Blackburn
(Cicero, N.Y. / Cicero-North Syracuse) were back at the pool outdoing themselves in the Friday evening session of the
SUNYAC Swimming and Diving Championship in Buffalo.
After a morning in which the team had set a new school record in the men's 200-yard medley
relay at 1:36.77 in their preliminary run, the team lowered their time by over a full second to 1:35.76 to re-establish a new
The time was good for fourth place and 30 points toward their team score.
In individual events, Zimmerman had vowed all season that he would break former teammate
and now graduated SUNYPotsdam swimmer Alexander Taylor's mark of 57.61 in the men's
100-yard breaststroke event.
The senior made good on that promise by clocking in at 57.41 to set a new Potsdam school
record and also narrowly finished behind SUNY Cortland's Jack Jakubek (57.08) to finish in
second place in the "A" final championship.
On the women's side, freshman Jennifer Yeager (Greene, N.Y. / Greene) broke a 30-year-old
Potsdam record that was set by Laura Foster in 1984 when she swam the women's 200-yard
freestyle in 2:00.60.
Yeager swam the event in 2:00.45 in Friday evening session during the "B" final.
The SUNYAC Swimming and Diving Championships will conclude on Saturday with a morning
session that begins at 10 a.m. and will be followed by an evening session that starts at 6 p.m.
In the morning session, three more SUNY Potsdam swimming records were broken on Friday
morning at the 2014 SUNYAC Swimmming and Diving Championships at Erie Community College's
Burt Flickinger Athletic Center in Buffalo. Among the new program records were senior
Ghena Binzer (Baldwinsville, N.Y. / C.W. Baker) in the women's 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:09.75.
Binzer broke her own record when she finished in 1:10.16.
Also, sophomore Tyler Zapisek (Syracuse, N.Y. / West Genesee) set a new school record in
the men's 100 butterfly (51.19), beating his own previous record of 51.65. The men's relay
team of Dan Costa, Richie Zimmerman, Ricky Blackburn and Zapisek broke their third school
record during the championships by clocking in the 200 medley relay in 1:36.77.
On Thursday, the team set new benchmarks in the men's 200 free relay and the 400 medley relay.
