POTSDAM, N.Y. – The SUNY Potsdam softball team will be participating in Potsdam Central's Adopt-A-Bear-Cub program this Saturday at the Lawrence Avenue Elementary School.
The Adopt-A-Bear-Cub program pairs elementary school children up one-on-one with college students who help the children with things such as homework and other academic related projects. After receiving a grant from the New York State Department of Health, the Adopt-A-Bear-Cub program was able to expand and offer more to the approximately 60 program participants.
“While the main focus of the program is academics there is a portion of the program's day-to-day activities that is dedicated to being active and moving,” says Nicole Feml, the Assistant Director for SUNY Potsdam's Center for School Partnerships and Teacher Certification. “The Potsdam softball team's primary focus will be teaching the children how to engage in safe movement.“
The Bear's softball team opens up their 2013 season this afternoon with a doubleheader against the Lyndon State Hornets. The first pitch is scheduled for 1pm at the Adirondack Sports Complex Dome in Queensbury, N.Y.
