Late rally puts Utica past Potsdam 7-6

The SUNY Potsdam women's lacrosse team couldn't quite hold on in losing 7-6 to Utica College on Saturday afternoon at Clarkson University's Hantz Turf Field.

The Bears led 6-4 with 18:35 remaining in the second half, but allowed the last three goals including the winner with just eight seconds left to Megan Kane to lift the Pioneers (2-1).

The game had been moved from Maxcy Turf Field to Hantz Turf Field due to the remaining icy remnants still affecting field conditions on the sidelines at SUNY Potsdam.

Potsdam (1-1) did a bit of rallying of its own earlier in the game, however, as the Bears came back from a 3-1 deficit.

Rebecca Plunkett scored the first five goals for Utica and added an assist on the winning goal.  Colleen Dowling assisted Plunkett on two of her first three goals and then added a goal with 12:23 left to tie the game at six.

The game was tied at four at halftime, but senior attacker Michelle Varney (Canton, N.Y. / Hugh C. Williams) scored twice included one on a free position shot to put Potsdam up 6-4.

Junior attacker Bailey Weigel (East Amherst, N.Y. / Williamsville East) added a goal, an assist, five groundballs and three draw controls to lead the Bears (1-1).

Sophomore attacker Bri McClusky (Watertown, N.Y. / Immaculate Heart) continued her fine play with a goal, her fourth of the season, while junior midfielder Margaret Wall (Rochester, N.Y. / Aquinas) and sophomore midfielder Lizzie Marchbanks (Liverpool, N.Y. / Liverpool) also put up a goal apiece.

Utica held a 19-15 shots on goal advantage and a 28-18 shots advantage.

Potsdam will return to action on Wednesday as the team will travel to Morrisville to play at 5:30 p.m.
