St. Lawrence downs Potsdam 12-7

The SUNY Potsdam women's lacrosse team fought their way back into its home opening game against St. Lawrence, but faced a 10-minute lull about midway through the second half that cost them in a 12-7 loss at Maxcy Turf Field on Thursday afternoon.

Marred by snowy and blustery conditions, the Bears played on their home turf for the first time this season.  Their original opener was scheduled for March 8 against Utica College, but the game was moved to Clarkson University due to icy field conditions.

Saints senior attacker Carly VanTassel (Adams Center, N.Y. / S. Jefferson) and sophomore Hannah Calvelli (Brighton, N.Y. / Brighton) had three goals apiece while Abigail Horan (Medfield, Mass. / Medfield) lent two huge insurance goals just as the Bears were getting back into the game.

Bears sophomore midfielder Brittany Blake (S. Glens Falls, N.Y. / S. Glens Falls) had just scored on a free position shot at 22:37 in the second half to make it 6-4.  Horan gave the Saints a three-goal cushion once again less than a minute later.

A turning point in the game occurred when Potsdam junior captain Margaret Wall (Rochester, N.Y. / Aquinas) had an apparent goal disallowed because of a new rule that states that the goal scorer's stick must be dropped directly after a score.  Two Bears players dropped their stick on the play and, as a result, it was disallowed.  That would have cut the lead back to two-goal deficit.

Instead, St. Lawrence took advantage of being a woman up on a pair of yellow cards and tacked on two more insurance goals to make it 9-4.

St. Lawrence (2-3) charged out to a 3-0 lead when sophomore midfielder Caroline Bailey (Hingham, Mass. / Hingham) struck first on a free position shot in the opening two minutes.  Calvelli added a goal on a feed by Parker Benedict at 23:33 and was followed by a VanTassel goal at 22:06.

Sophomore midfielder Bri McClusky (Watertown, N.Y. / IHC) got the Bears on the board with 20:29 left on an assist from freshman Katie Lapinski (Canton, N.Y. / Hugh C. Williams).

Potsdam played from behind throughout, but tightened their defense in the later part of the first half.  McClusky scored again from junior midfielder Bailey Weigel (East Amherst, N.Y. / Williamsville East) to cut it to 4-2 with 13:47 left.  Weigel scored in the last minute of the first half to cut the lead to 5-3 just before halftime.

Bailey picked up her second goal of the day to give St. Lawrence a 4-1 advantage.  VanTassel scored again at 8:32 by picking up a groundball after her original shot deflected back out in front of the net to give St. Lawrence a 5-2 edge. With 12:11 remaining in the game, VanTassel made a cut and quick spin move around her defender to push the lead to 11-5.

The Bears (1-2) kept playing hard though and found ways to score.  Weigel scored on an assist from Lapinski inside the 20-minute mark.  Lapinski notched her first career goal at 4:57 and Blake added her second goal unassisted at 1:29.

Saints junior goaltender Adden Cunningham (2-3) made 12 saves to pick up the victory while Bears senior captain Jen Chmiel (Rochester, N.Y. / Aquinas) saved eight shots to fall to 1-2.

Potsdam will play at SUNY Canton on Friday at 4 p.m.  The Bears will next make a trip to Florida to take on Concordia (Wis.) and RIT on March 25 and 27 in West Palm Beach to participate in the Spring Fling Tournament.  Each game will begin at 11:30 a.m.
