Bears split on second day in Florida
CLERMONT, FL – The SUNY Potsdam softball team (4-1) split their two game slate versus Loras College (IA) and Carroll University (WI) at the National Training Center in Clermont, Fla. Saturday afternoon.
Loras used a strong offensive showing in the first contest of the day to defeat the Bears, 11-4. The Duhawks would claim an early 2-0 advantage in the top of the first inning. Freshman Jordan Sarat responded with a single to drive in junior teammate Ashley Thayer to notch the score at 2-1 after one. However, Loras continued to find the gaps and would add three more runs in two innings to secure a 5-1 lead. Potsdam continued to battle as juniors Brittany Thivierge and Molly McCuin each notched RBIs to bring the Bears to within one run after three innings. Yet, the Duhawks were able to pull away from Potsdam in the remaining innings to secure the win.
Thivierge went one for three with two RBIs. Sarat allowed eight hits and finished with six strikeouts in seven innings pitched.
In the second contest, the Bears battled back-and-forth with the Pioneers of Carroll University. Potsdam would earn the victory behind a strong offensive performance and gritty pitching. Carroll would claim an early 3-1 lead after the first inning. The Bears responded in the second as a triple by junior Megan Johnson and a great bunt by Thayer gave Potsdam the 4-3 lead. The Pioneers would tie the game at four all in the bottom of the inning. Senior captain Heather Johnson was able to generate some momentum for the Bears in the fourth inning with a three run bomb to center field to claim a 7-4 advantage. However, the Pioneers would answer with four runs of their own to retake the lead. H. Johnson stepped up again for Potsdam in the fifth inning with a single up the middle to drive in two runs. Junior Khalshia White followed suit in the sixth with a double down the left field line to cap off the Bears scoring and secure the hard fought 10-8 victory.
H. Johnson finished two for three with five RBIs. M. Johnson concluded two for three with two RBIs. Thayer recorded three strikeouts in three innings. M. Johnson allowed three hits in three innings pitched and tallied three strikeouts.
The Bears return to action on Monday, Mar. 25 at 11 a.m. against Elgin College and 3 p.m. versus Rainy River College.
