Potsdam romps Castleton State 16-4
It was another career-setting day for the SUNY Potsdam men's lacrosse team as the Bears dispatched of Castleton State 16-4 at Maxcy Turf Field on Saturday afternoon in a nonconference game.
The goals came as steady as the snow flurries did throughout the contest as sophomore Ed Doherty (Amherst, N.Y. / Amherst), senior attacker Rob Kunz (Watertown, N.Y. / IHC) and junior Jon Woodworth (Carthage, N.Y. / Carthage) teamed up to each enjoy personal-best games while the defense and the goaltending of the Bears kept the Spartans in check.
The loss snapped a five-game winning streak for Castleton (6-4), who had entered allowing just 6.59 goals per game.
Doherty caught fire during the second quarter by scoring four goals during that time and finished with six goals on six shots and an assist. Doherty's previous single-game high was three goals against Alfred State back on March 8 in a 21-1 Bears rout. He has already more than doubled his goal output from a season ago when he had seven last season. Doherty has racked up 16 goals thus far in just nine games.
Not to be outdone, Kunz also put a new career-high mark for most points in a game with nine (three goals, six assists). That total surpassed his seven-point effort (three goals, four assists) against Alfred State on March 8 earlier this season.
Sophomore Pat Bonafede (Churchville, N.Y. / Churchville-Chili) matched his single-game high for points with five (four goals, one assist). He had that point total just four days earlier against SUNY Canton. Woodworth's four assists were also a career-high for most points in a game.
Sophomore midfielder Matt Kennedy (Clay, N.Y. / CNS) got the Bears (6-3) on the board first and the goals continued at a steady pace from there. Kunz (Watertown, N.Y. / IHC) ripped a goal on an assist from Bonafede. And, then Bonafede scored himself just one minute and 31 seconds later to force a Castleton timeout.
Spartans' fireballer Zack Davidson, far and away Castleton's top scorer, cut the lead to 3-1 on his 26th goal of the season. Castleton picked up a man-up advantage shortly thereafter on a slashing call, but Bears goalie Ryan Duffy (Liverpool, N.Y. / Liverpool) was able to come up with a save during the one-minute penalty. Duffy played three full quarters and made 15 saves.
A touch of misfortunate cost the Spartans when after a shot by the Bears' Matt Donovan was initially saved, however the ball was dropped by the goalie on his attempt to clear and the ball scooted across the plane to make it 4-1.
Kunz scored on an assist from Woodworth to push the lead to 5-1 in the waning seconds of the first quarter.
The barrage continued for Potsdam as Doherty jumped and scored near the crease area in the opening minutes of the second quarter. Doherty launched another goal after falling to the ground. Davidson notched his second goal to make it 7-2.
Kunz completed a hat trick of his own just after the Bears' man up advantage expired and Doherty made good on another man-up advantage. Potsdam led 11-3 at the break.
In the third quarter, Potsdam opened it up further by outscoring Castleton 4-0. Doherty scored from Kunz in the opening minute. Bonafede netted two more goals and Matt Moran scored from Kunz.
Davidson led the Spartans with three goals and an assist while Zach Green added a goal and an assist.
Potsdam will next host Plattsburgh in a SUNYAC game on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
