Brockport tops Potsdam
POTSDAM, N.Y.—The College at Brockport (8-2, 3-0 SUNYAC) overpowered the SUNY Potsdam women's lacrosse team (3-4, 1-1) 21-5 at Maxcy Turf Field on Saturday afternoon. Golden Eagles were led by senior attack Sarah Brown who had seven assists. Sophomore midfielder Margaret Wall paced the Bears with three goals.
Brockport seized control early as Brown fired a pass from behind the net and sophomore attack Ciara McKeon buried the feed just 32 seconds into the contest. The goal ignited a 13-1 first half for the Golden Eagles, including a 9-0 start. Brown assisted on six of the goals. Senior Midfielder Emily Zartman scored three times and McKeon, sophomore midfielder Erin Featherstone, freshman midfielder Makensie Schuber each contributed two goals during the opening half. Wall got Potsdam on the board at the 8:45 mark on a pass from freshman attack Bri McClusky.
The Bears opened second half with a 3-0 run. Wall scored her second at just 20 seconds into the period on pass from sophomore attack Bailey Weigel. Senior captain Denise Johns scored on a free position nearly four minutes later and sophomore midfielder Emily Petit set up Wall's third tally at 24:40 to cap the run. The Golden Eagles quashed Potsdam's momentum with a 3-0 run of their own four minutes later. Junior midfielder Alyssa Scordo struck for two in a row and Brown setup Potsdam native Kaila McGuire at 18:52 for a 16-4 advantage. Petit netted Potsdam's fifth and final goal at 17:05. The Eagles then closed the contest with a 5-0 run for the 21-5 final.
In goal, junior Jen Chmiel stopped 16 shots for the Bears, while sophomore Remle Harr earned the victory for Brockport with two saves.
The Golden Eagles outshot Potsdam 42-11 and finished with a 31-18 edge in groundballs.
The Bears are back in action tomorrow afternoon as they host SUNY Canton at 4 p.m.
