POTSDAM, N.Y.—Plattsburgh State (3-5-1, 1-0 SUNYAC) scored an early goal and made it stand up as they edged the SUNY Potsdam women's soccer team (3-5-1, 0-1) 1-0 on Saturday afternoon at Maxcy Turf Field.

The Cardinals started quickly. Just 3:01 into the contest freshman forward Diana DiCocco fed senior defender Lauren Gonyea at the left side of the net. Gonyea fired a shot off the hands of Potsdam freshman goalie Michaela Cole for a 1-0 lead. The Bears defense calmed things down for the next 27 minutes. In the 30th minute, Plattsburgh nearly converted on another strong opportunity. Freshman midfielder Maddy Trombley fired a shot off the crossbar after a Cardinal corner kick, but Cole cleared the ball out of harms way. Plattsburgh added a few more chances before the half, but the score remained 1-0 after 45 minutes.

After some early Cardinal shots, the Bears evened out the play. The final third of the period saw back in forth action with the teams trading chances. Potsdam freshman forward Hailey Hollenbeck had a chance with 1:09 remaining, but Cardinal junior goalie Kirsty Kirkpatrick corralled the shot to seal the win.

Kirkpatrick finished with two saves to earn the shutout. Cole made eight stops for Potsdam.

The Bears are back in action on Friday, Oct. 4, when they travel to Cortland to take on the Red Dragons at 3 p.m.
