Bears battle to scoreless draw with Kangaroos; retain Jones Cup in PK's
CANTON, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam women's soccer team (2-11-1) battled to a scoreless tie at SUNY Canton (6-7-1), but held on to the Boyd Jones Cup in with a 5-4 win in penalty kicks. The Bears are now 2-0-1 against the Kangaroos in Jones Cup matchups. Canton goalie Laura Pratt finished with 16 saves, while Potsdam freshman Shannon Weader made 11 stops. Senior forward Heather Johnson scored the clinching penalty kick goal.
Potsdam outshot the Kangaroos 10-5 in the first half. The Bears put six of those shots on goal, but Pratt handled all of them in the opening period. Despite the deficit in shots, the Roos put all but one of their attempts on Weader, but the freshman kept the contest scoreless.
Canton closed the gap slightly in the second half, but neither team was able to break through. Potsdam compiled an 8-6 shot advantage. Both goalies matched their first half totals in saves.
In the first overtime, the Kangaroos outshot the Bears 3-1. Weader made two more saves and Pratt stopped another shot. Potsdam put good pressure on Canton in the second overtime, forcing Pratt to come up with three more stops, but had to settle for the scoreless draw. The Bears scored on all five penalty kick attempts they took to edge out the Roos on Johnson's goal for the cup.
Potsdam returns to action this weekend as the Bears host Buffalo State at 4 p.m. on Friday and Fredonia State at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
