OSWEGO, N.Y. – The SUNY Potsdam volleyball team (22-15) completed a two game sweep at the Oswego tri-match Saturday afternoon. The Bears downed St. John Fisher (8-20) three sets to one and sank the Oswego Lakers (12-18), 3-0.
The Bears stumbled in the first set of the afternoon as the Cardinals won, 25-18. Potsdam halted the St. John Fisher momentum as they rolled through the Cardinals in the next three sets 25-21, 25-17, 25-14. Freshman outside hitter Rachel Auerbach led the Bears surge with 14 kills and senior middle hitter Kayla Howard added 12. Junior setter Jenna Blujus tallied 34 assists and 16 digs. Senior libero Jill Dye contributed 13 digs to lock down the back row.
“St. John Fisher came out with a lot of energy in the first set,” said Head Coach Steve Pike. “Our serve/receive improved and I thought that was the key to our victory. Jenna ran a good offense, Jill passed well, and Anne Fildes had a great serving run.”
Potsdam continued to roll in the second contest of the afternoon. The Bears charged out of the gate early and continued to put pressure on the Oswego defense. Howard controlled the net with 10 kills and two blocks. Blujus totaled 23 assists and six digs. Dye led the defense with 14 digs, respectively.
“I thought we came out and had an entire team effort,” said Pike. “We had contributions from across the board and we played at a good consistent level.”
The Bears are back in action on Friday, Nov. 2 for the first round of the SUNYAC Championships against Oneonta State. First serve is set for 12 p.m.
