Crusaders down Bears, 6-2

WORCESTER, MASS.—The College of Holy Cross (1-0) jumped out to a 6-0 lead en route to a 6-2 victory over the SUNY Potsdam women's hockey team (0-2) on Sunday afternoon. Freshman forward Rachel Grefke and sophomore forward Izzy Fayerman each scored for the Bears.

The Crusaders opened the scoring at 3:57 of the first period with a power-play goal from Rebecca O'Quinn. Francesca Panarelli and Caroline English assisted on the goal. Rebecca Fleming made it 2-0 nearly 13 minutes later with assists English and Meaghan Sullivan. Potsdam was 0-3 on the power play in the first period.

Holy Cross scored twice more in the first 53 seconds of the second period. Nicole Giannino scored during four-on-four play just 32 seconds into the middle 20 minutes with an assist from Mary Klimasewiski. Twenty-one seconds later, English made it 4-0 on the man-advantage. Fleming and O'Quinn recorded the helpers. Giannino notched her second at 11:13, finishing a feed from Amanda Gallagher. The Bears trailed 5-0 at the second intermission.

O'Quinn made it 6-0 just 33 seconds into the final period with assists from Panarelli and English. The Bears finally responded with a two-goal rally as they had the night before, but this time the deficit was too great. Grefke got Potsdam on the board at 8:25 with her second career goal. Freshmen forwards Sarah Nelson and Kakia Ashley assisted on the play. Three minutes later Fayerman capped the scoring with a power-play marker. Freshman forward Sally Mooney and sophomore forward Emilee Hazelden each notched assists.

Potsdam senior goalie Jen Conophy finished with 16 saves, while Krista Manzanares earned the victory with nine. The Crusaders outshot the Bears 22-11 on the afternoon. Holy Cross was 2-7 on the power play and Potsdam went 1-7.

The Bears are back in action Tues., Nov. 6 at Plattsburgh for their ECAC West opener. Game time is 7 p.m.
