Zimmerman leads way in 100-yard breaststroke; seven swimmers compete in "A" finals at SUNY Fredonia Invite

Individuals from the SUNY Potsdam swimming and diving teams were strong enough to compete in seven "A" final events while two other men's relay teams and a long-distance women's swimmer placed in the top five for the events that ran Friday and Saturday during the Fredonia Invitational.

SUNY Fredonia had the top overall combined score with 1,360.5 points.  Their women's team was second with 606 points while their men took first place with 754.5 points.  Potsdam did not compete in Sunday's events so it affected their score, but the Bear were still able to rack up 138 points on the women's side and another 197 points in men's events.  Potsdam wound up in eighth with 335.

Senior Richie Zimmerman (Victor, N.Y. / Victor) turned in yet another speedy performance by placing second in the men's 100-yard breaststroke "A" final on day two of the Invitational by clocking in at 59.82 on Saturday.  His time was edged out by .22 of a second behind Wheeling Jesuit University senior Bill Risse.

On Friday, Zimmerman earned a time of 2:00.45 for a fourth-place spot in the 200-yard individual medley in the "A" final.
The men's 400-yard relay team of Zimmerman, sophomore Tyler Zapisek (Syracuse, N.Y. / West Genesee), junior Daniel Costa (Spencerport, N.Y. / Spencerport) and freshman Ricky Blackburn (Cicero, N.Y. / Cicero-North Syracuse) earned a fourth-place finish with a time of 3:38.49.

The same foursome swam the 800-yard free relay in 7:31.85 to place fifth.

Zapisek was fourth in the 100-yard freestyle at 48.84.  Costa also qualified for an "A" final by taking part in the men's 200-yard backstroke.  His time of 2:05.72 was good enough to pick up 11 points.

Junior Victoria Blakeslee (Gloversville, N.Y. / Gloversville) picked up a fifth-place finish in the "A" final of the 200-yard individual medley (2:16.21) and a sixth-place finish in the "A" final of the 500-yard freestyle at 5:23.76.

Senior Ghena Binzer (Baldwinsville, N.Y. / C.W. Baker) competed in an "A" final as well in the women's 100-yard breaststroke.  She recorded a time of 1:12.86 to pick up 11 points for Potsdam.

Freshman Kristin Canjura (Wilton, N.Y / Saratoga Springs) was fifth in the 1650-yard freestyle with an 18:46.67.
