Engineers slip past Bears, 1-0

POTSDAM, N.Y.—Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (3-2-1) got a goal from freshman forward Vince Bennett (Madison, N.J./Madison) in the 85th minute to down the SUNY Potsdam men's soccer team 1-0 at home on Saturday afternoon.

The Engineers controlled the play territorially in the first half, taking 10 shots on goal and not allowing one against. Bears senior goalie Joseph Glackin made three saves and got some help from his defense to defuse several potentially dangerous situations. The teams headed into the break with a scoreless tie.

Potsdam opened up the game as the second half progressed. In the 63rd minute, Bears freshman forward Tom Benedetto found himself alone on the left post, but RPI junior goalie Craig Bennett charged out to deflect the shot. Sophomore forward Eduardo Figueroa created two quality chances over the next 10 minutes, but Bennett kept them out of the net. At the 84:19 mark, senior midfielder Adam Updegrove slipped the ball through the Bears' defense to Bennett who drove it home. Potsdam had a final chance off the foot of Figueroa with just over a minute remaining, but Bennett hauled it in to preserve the shutout.

In goal, Glackin finished with six saves, while Bennett stopped four shots.

The Bears are back in action tomorrow when they host the Cardinals of St. John Fisher at 1 p.m.
