POTSDAM, N.Y.— Junior forward Nikki Liadka scored two goals to lift Oswego State (4-4, 1-2 SUNYAC) to a 3-0 victory over the SUNY Potsdam women's soccer team (2-7, 0-2) on Friday afternoon at Maxcy Hall.
Potsdam started quickly, creating several chances from aggressive play in the opening five minutes. Sophomore midfielder Kristin Webster lifted a direct kick just over the crossbar five minutes into the contest. Two minutes later, Lakers senior goalie Emily Varonier handled a long shot from freshman midfielder Jess Sterns. Oswego's first chance of the half came off the foot of senior Shelly Bateman, but the forward fired the ball just wide of the left post. At the 19:58 mark, senior midfielder Kassie Kleine chased down a long pass on the right side of the field and crossed it in front to Liadka. The junior buried the chance for a 1-0 Laker advantage. Potsdam stopped any ensuing Oswego momentum with two quick chances from senior captain Heather Johnson. However, the Lakers maintained one-goal lead at the break.
Oswego slowly gained the upper hand in the second half, but Potsdam's best chance came in the 55th minute. Bears freshman forward Erin McClusky blocked a clearing attempt, picked up the ball with a straight route to the net, but was whistled for a handball. At 68:24, Bateman found Liadka in front and the junior roofed the ball to make it 2-0. The Lakers tacked on a final marker with under four minutes to play as Kleine picked up a pass from freshman Bailey Waterbury, made a move around charging Potsdam freshman goalie Jaime Durant and fired the ball into the empty net.
In goal, Durant finished with four saves for the Bears. Varonier stopped five shots in the first 87:21 to earn the shutout. Freshman Alyssa Glasshagel closed out the contest for the Lakers, facing no Potsdam shots in the final 2:39.
The Bears are back in action tomorrow as they host Cortland at 1 p.m.
